5 Hot Summer Travel Tips From Nutrishare

5 Hot Summer Travel Tips From Nutrishare

Published on

Summer is here, and we hope you have a fun reason to travel. Maybe you can take a rejuvenating vacation or visit family and friends. Or of course you could be traveling for important medical appointments.

Whatever the reason, here are five hot travel tips to help you have a successful trip:

1. Give a shout out to your Nutrishare team early

Yes, we have said it before, but this is important – reach out to inform your Nutrishare clinician about your travel plans weeks or even months in advance.

Each type of travel requires different timelines. We may need to determine if there are any special considerations to ship your TPN and supplies to the places in the U.S. that you are visiting. There may also be clinical considerations that require extra time to prepare. Some consumers may need extra IV hydration to get around and expend more energy in the summer heat. In certain circumstances for long trips, a shelf-stable formula could be an option. If so, our team will need time to contact your doctor and trial you on the formula before you leave.

Remember, the earlier you reach out for help, the easier it will be to address shipping and clinical issues, so your plans can go off without a hitch.

2. Check out the new TSA Cares virtual assistant

TSA screening at U.S. airports can be intimidating for anyone, let alone those who live on nutrition support.
Fliers from our community worry about how officers will inspect the medical devices on their bodies and how their medical liquids like IV fluids will be screened and if they will be confiscated. That is why requesting TSA Cares assistance at least 72 hours before your departure is necessary. With this assistance from a TSA passenger support specialist or supervisor, travelers are usually contacted before arriving at the airport with instructions and receive personalized service during the screening process.

Now TSA has launched a new tool to request this assistance and ask any other questions: Ace, the virtual assistant. It can be found on the bottom right of the tsa.gov home page (see image above). You can also still request help by calling TSA Cares at +1 (855) 787-2227 or by completing the form here: Request for TSA Cares Assistance | Transportation Security Administration

3. Know the keys to packing your PN and supplies

Whatever your mode of transportation, keep your PN safe in a reliable cooler. The best type depends on your trip and preferences. For long trips, some people prefer an inexpensive disposable cooler to reduce baggage on the return trip. However, if you plan to check your PN at the airport, a heavy-duty cooler that can withstand rough handling may be the better choice. Before you travel, test your cooler by packing it tightly with bubble wrap and frozen ice packs, then track how long it keeps your PN between 36°F and 46°F. Make sure it stays cold until you can transfer it to a refrigerator.
For packing other supplies, keep a checklist. Some travelers prefer to have separate plastic bag labeled for each day of infusion, with extras. Every day you can pull out the bag for that infusion that is ready to go. Pick your supplies to pack during your normal connecting and unhooking routines to give you the best chance not to miss anything.

4. TSA has another option if you do not have Real ID or passport

According to statistics posted on tsa.gov, TSA screens well over 2 million people every day at U.S. airports. Did you know that the TSA says 6% of these travelers going through TSA security checkpoints don’t have a Real ID or passport? TSA needed to implement another option for the thousands who do not have these approved forms of ID.

Recently, the TSA Traveler Engagement Division announced the ConfirmID program. Here’s how it works:
  • Go to: https://www.tsa.gov/tsaconfirm-id . This takes travelers to a short form to complete and to pay a non-refundable $45 fee. This fee covers the cost of the background check to confirm identity.

  • A receipt is generated. Travelers must present an unexpired receipt at the TSA checkpoint to verify fee payment. A hard copy or electronic copy is needed. This is good for 10 days. After 10 days, they will need to repeat the process and pay again.

  • The process to verify a person’s identity usually takes 10-30 minutes. This must be done online. TSA does not have forms to complete or take payment in person at the checkpoint. Travelers should complete this before they arrive at the airport whenever possible. Those trying to do it while they are in the security line will be sent to the back of the line until they have their receipt.

5. Prep ahead before motoring up and setting sail

If a multi-week trip by car or RV to take in some sights around U.S. is the way to go for you, call us to discuss a potential delivery plan. Do not forget to get out of your vehicle and walk around at least every 2 hours to prevent blood clots and pad seatbelts with soft material to protect your central line during a sudden stop.
For cruisers, call your cruise line to ask to contact a medical director and ask how they can assist with your medical needs. Do their personnel have experience with central line or feeding tube issues? Also find out if your cabin fridge is large enough to hold PN and is cold as a regular fridge – 36F-46F degrees – to store it. If not, ask about other options.
Whatever your plans are this summer, plan ahead, stay educated, and have fun!
